In Web Ad, President of Prince George’s NAACP Branch Endorses Question 6
PG joins Baltimore, state and national NAACP in support of marriage equality
BALTIMORE – Bob Ross, president of the Prince George’s Branch of the NAACP, appears in a new web ad expressing his support for Maryland’s ballot Question 6, the Civil Marriage Protection Act. Question 6 allows gay and lesbian couples to get a marriage license from a courthouse.
“Question 6 gives gays and lesbians the right to obtain a marriage license,” Ross says in the ad. “It doesn’t force the church, clergy, or anyone to marry them. It is the fair thing to do for all citizens in the state of Maryland.” The ad can be viewed here: http://bit.ly/POx2PO
Following President Obama’s endorsement of marriage equality in May, the national NAACP Board of Directors announced its support of the issue, citing the equal protection Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Ross joins other Prince George’s County leaders, including Rep. Donna Edwards, Delegate Jolene Ivey, and Rev. Delman Coates of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in their support of Question 6.
Polls continue to show 54% of Marylanders will vote for Question 6 on the November ballot, with 40% against.
Of the Ross announcement, Fred Mason, president of 300,000-member AFL-CIO in Maryland, said, “I’m so proud to see the momentum for civil marriage in the African-American community growing as we head into November.”
On Friday, September 21, high-profile African-American clergy from around the country will be holding a news conference in support of Question 6 at the National Press Club in Washington.
Marylanders for Marriage Equality is the campaign to protect marriage on the November ballot.
